I Quit Being a Short-Order Cook - Here's What Happened to My Picky Eater

Image
For every parent who's ever made mac and cheese at 6 AM because it was the only 'safe' breakfast option. You know that moment when you've lovingly prepared what you thought was a "safe" meal or maybe even their favorite from last week, and your child takes one look and declares, "Eww, I don't want this"? Yeah, that moment where your heart sinks a little and you wonder if you're failing at this whole parenting thing. We've all been there. Standing in the kitchen, looking at yet another rejected plate, while everyone around us says, "It's just a phase" or "Kids won't starve themselves." And while they're technically right about picky eating being normal, here's what I've learned:   Just because something is developmentally typical doesn't mean it's not    incredibly challenging to live through as a parent. If you're the parent feeling like a short-order cook, questioning your food ch...

Parenting Hacks: Making Your Kid's Lunches Fun, Healthy, and Stress-Free!

Packed Lunches.

Hello BUBS family!

Let’s talk about one of the most challenging parts of being a parent—preparing your kid's lunch every day. We all know the struggle: trying to keep it healthy, exciting, and easy to put together, all while juggling a million other things. We’ve got some parenting hacks to make the lunch prep process not easier more fun for both you and your kiddos!

Get Your Kids Involved in the Process 🍎

Why should you do all the work? One of the best ways to get kids excited about their lunch is by letting them be part of the process. Ask them to help you pack their lunches or choose what they want for the week. You can set up a "lunch buffet" with options like fruits, veggies, proteins, and snacks, and let them assemble their own lunchboxes. Not only does this lighten your load, but it also helps them feel more invested in eating what they’ve packed!

Make It Fun with Shapes and Colors 🌈

Let's face it, kids are visual creatures (lol), and a lunch that looks fun is way more likely to get eaten. Use cookie cutters to shape sandwiches into stars, hearts, or even animals. A mix of bright fruits and veggies not only makes their lunchbox more appealing but also ensures they’re getting those all-important nutrients. Plus, who doesn't love colorful, bite-sized food?

Batch Prep for the Win! 🥙

If you’re constantly scrambling to put something together each morning, batch prepping will save you a ton of time. Spend a little time on Sunday cutting fruits, veggies, and prepping sandwich ingredients that you can easily grab and pack throughout the week. You can even make snacks like muffins, granola bars, or mini quiches in advance and freeze them for later. Just pop them into the lunchbox in the morning, and they’ll be good to go by lunch!

Healthy Swaps That Don’t Skimp on Flavor 🥑

Sneak in the good stuff without sacrificing flavor! Swap out regular chips for baked or veggie chips, trade sugary fruit snacks for dried fruit, or replace store-bought granola bars with homemade versions packed with oats, seeds, and honey. You’ll still get the crunchy, sweet satisfaction but with a healthier twist. And trust me, they’ll hardly notice the difference!

Go Eco-Friendly with Reusable Containers 🥤

Why not make lunch more sustainable while you're at it? Swap out plastic baggies for reusable sandwich wraps or containers (we've got those bento lunch containers). You’ll reduce waste and save money in the long run. Plus, a lot of the reusable containers come in fun colors or designs, which makes lunchtime even more exciting for your little one.

Keep It Balanced but Flexible 🥪🍓

Every parent wants to make sure their child’s lunch is nutritious, but it’s important not to stress over it being perfect every day. Aim for a good mix of protein, healthy fats, fruits, and veggies, but also toss in a treat now and then—whether that’s a cookie, their favorite chips, or a small candy. Remember, balance is key, but flexibility makes it fun!

Include a Little Surprise!

Who doesn’t love a surprise? Whether it’s a cute note, a funny joke, or a sticker, adding something extra to your kid’s lunchbox can turn their day around. It’s a simple, sweet way to let them know you’re thinking about them, even when they’re at school.

Don’t Get Disappointed If They Don’t Eat It All 🍴

We’ve all been there—your kid comes home with half the lunch untouched, and you’re left feeling defeated. It’s tough, and it can feel heartbreaking at times when you’ve put effort into making something healthy and delicious. But here’s the thing—it’s okay! Kids can be unpredictable with food, especially when they're around friends or in a new environment. Just keep trying, experimenting, and don’t take it personally. Tomorrow is another day and another chance for a clean plate!

Bonus Tip: Make Lunch Packing a Team Effort 👫

Don't be afraid to delegate! Turn lunch-packing into a family ritual. Whether it’s getting your partner to help prep or turning it into a fun activity with the kids, it’s a small chore that can be a fun bonding moment at the end of the day.

Packing lunches doesn’t have to be a chore—use these simple hacks to keep things fun, fresh, and stress-free. And remember, if your little one refuses the veggies one day, don’t sweat it. Tomorrow’s another chance!
