Apparently, I Went Back to School Too.

Image
Why Does Back-to-School Feel Like a Second Full-Time Job? My Kid Started School, and Apparently I Did Too Somewhere along the way, back-to-school stopped being just about new sneakers, a backpack, and showing up on the first day. Now it comes with emails, school apps, calendars, forms, lunch accounts, classroom updates, aftercare messages, sports schedules, and group chats that somehow become active the second you put your phone down. And somewhere, buried inside one of those apps, is probably a message saying my kid needs to bring in 14 empty toilet paper rolls tomorrow. I will discover this at 8:47 tonight. Welcome back to school. When Did School Become a Full-Time Administrative Job? As a kid, I remember the whole thing feeling pretty simple. You got your school supplies, maybe some new clothes, and then you went. I'm sure our parents were doing plenty behind the scenes, but I don't remember them logging into six different systems before breakfas...

The Summer Camp Shuffle

Image
The Summer Camp Shuffle Is Real (And Yes, You Can Actually Afford It) A no-judgment guide to patching together a summer that doesn't wreck your budget Okay, let's be real about what June actually looks like. You've got a spreadsheet (or a chaotic Notes app list) trying to cover roughly ten weeks of summer. Week one is the YMCA. Week two is the science camp that was weirdly expensive but your kid begged. Weeks three and four are... a question mark. Grandma takes a week. There's a gap in July where two camps don't line up and you're already planning to "work from home" with a 5yo climbing on you... That's the summer camp shuffle. T he annual scramble where you stitch together a patchwork of camps, sitters, and favors to keep your kids busy, safe, and learning while you still, you know, have a job. It's stressful, it's expensive, and almost nobody talks about how hard the logistics actually are. So let's talk about it. Why camp matters m...

Spring Cleaning with Kids: The First Closet Purge of 2026

Image
I opened my 4-year-old's closet last weekend and clothes literally fell on my head. Not a shirt or two. A full avalanche. Tiny pants from when he was 2. A onesie that somehow survived three kids. A Halloween costume from 2024 that I swore I donated. It's April. The weather is finally turning. And I realized: half this closet doesn't even fit him anymore. Sound familiar? The Spring Closet Reality Check Here's what I found in one closet: 47 shirts (he wears maybe 8 on rotation) 12 pairs of pants that are too short 3 winter coats (we live in Jersey City, not Antarctica) A bin labeled "6-12 months" for my now-1-year-old who is solidly in 18 months This isn't hoarding. This is parenting. Kids grow stupid fast, and we're all just trying to keep up. The Three-Pile Method That Actually Works I tried the Marie Kondo thing once. "Does it spark joy?" My kid's stained dinosaur shirt sparks JOY, but it's also two sizes too small and has a mysterio...

This Week's Parenting Wins: Celebrating the Small (But Actually Huge) Moments

Image
"Some weeks feel like survival mode. But this week?  This week had some wins worth celebrating... and I'm taking a moment to soak them in before the next diaper blowout or meltdown over the 'wrong' cup." The Milestones That Make Your Heart Melt My win:  My daughter waved for the first time this week. Not just a random hand flail, an actual, intentional wave goodbye to her dad. And then she did it again. And again. I may have teared up. She's also decided that "uh-oh" is her new favorite phrase. Everything is "uh-oh." Dropped her toy? Uh-oh. Knocked over her sippy cup? Uh-oh. Had the dogs eat from her hands...  "uh-oh" (I love this stage). The best part?  She's not just babbling, she's  talking to me . Making eye contact, waiting for my reaction, trying to tell me things in her own little language. We're having conversations, and even though I understand maybe 10% of what she's saying, it feels awesome. And physic...

Why Today's Young Parents Are Overwhelmed

Image
A parent's reflection on finding peace in a chaotic world Okay, let's be real for a second. It's 9 PM. You've just gotten the kids to bed after a marathon day. You collapse on the couch, phone in hand, and within 60 seconds you've scrolled past: heated political arguments from both sides, another policy change that affects families, economic uncertainty, climate crisis updates, and someone's perfect parenting moment on Instagram. Your group chat is arguing. Your family is divided. And you just... can't anymore. You close the app. The Weight You're Carrying Here's the thing nobody prepared us for: parenting in 2025 isn't just about raising kids. It's about raising kids while the world feels like it's constantly on fire. If you're feeling like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, you're not alone. 6 in 10 young adults report feeling overwhelmed by news and events happening in their community, country, and the ...

The $875 Back 2 School Bill: Why Parents Are Turning to Resale

Image
The Real Cost of Kids' Stuff Summer's over, school is back in full swing, and if you're like most parents, you're still recovering from the financial whiplash of September. Between back 2 school shopping, fall sports registration, new shoes (again), and the sudden realization that literally nothing from last year fits anymore.... AND your bank account is probably looking pretty rough right about now. Yup. Let's circle back to this topic since we're fresh into a new school year, and because honestly, the numbers haven't changed, but maybe your approach can. The average family drops between $16,000 and $36,000 annually per child on basic necessities, depending on where you live. And a huge chunk of that? It hits all at once between August and October. It's not just expensive. It's exhausting . The Back 2 School Breakdown Here's the thing nobody warns you about: back 2 school isn't just about pencils and notebooks anymore. It's a...
